In the southern most part of Siberia, where Russia meets Mongolia, China and Kazakhstan, the Altai mountains are said to be the heart of central Asia. The Golden Mountains of Altai is a UNESCO World Heritage site because of its scenery, rich alpine ecosystem and source of two of Siberia’s greatest rivers. The area is currently threatened by a pipeline Russia wants to build to bring natural gas to China.
